I'm able to play these files in GNOME MPlayer but Guayadeque isn't picking them up...
Do I just convert them using SoundConverter or is there some way to play them in the player?

Done...
Note that no other audio player plays them, that I can find in Linux, nor can audioconverter only movie players - so ffmpeg decoding ?

As I explained in my email Guayadeque need to add support to any audio format that gstreamer and taglib support it. In this case there is no such support and this makes not possible to guayadeque to add support to this format.
Maybe in the future this support can be added but in the mean time you can convert the files using ffmpeg
Thanks for your help

Many thanks, your kind attention has been way beyond the call of duty. For anyone else reading this: WinFF, available in Ubuntu repositories and in many other distros, is a useful GUI for ffmpeg.
