Maybe I'm stupid but in previous versions there was a copy to option when you selected an album so you could copy the contents to an external drive. I can't find it any more in rev 1406. I've tried from the album list, browser, now playing window and file system but there's nothing...

You need to create the patterns in 'Preferences -> Copy to' section. If no pattern is created the Copy to option dont appears.

What format does the pattern need to be? If I want to copy files to a player mounted at /media/disk for example, what do I need to put in?

The screenshot doesn't have any of the entries highlighted

For example: {g}/{a}/{b} - {a} - {t} (where {g}/{a}/{b} would be the folder structure and {a} - {t} the track name. You will be asked where to save the files. The end location is not part of the saved patterned. (But I once suggested it should be)

I'm still not completely sure I understand but I'll try it out when I get a chance later.
I just want to copy an album to a mounted disk, preserving the existing names and playing order so I suppose it should be something like

{a} - {b}/{t}

The existing filename option is {f} so it should be {a} - {b}/{f}

Right. That patter is also useful for transcoding.
