Some advice please

I'm thinking of getting my music into an external hard drive and access it from there. This would be either usb 3.o or eSATA. What are people experiences with this? any advice/issues/tips/etc?

The drive would have to be shared with Windows (not at the same time). Does guayadeque cope well with ntfs?

Windows would be managing photos and linux/guayadeque music. Maybe different partitions is a better idea?

I would appretiate some help

Also, what's the best way in guayadeque to manage two collections: internal/external harddrive?

Some advice please

I can answer your last question. The best way is to manage the external collection as a Portable Player Device. This way you can have two libraries with everything sparatelly.

Sounds like a good possibility. My concern here is that if I remember OK guayadeque has to rescan portable devices every time.

Another possibility is maybe to do it the other way around: have the external collection as the main collection and manage the internal collection (in a separete partition) as a PPD. Not sure this would be practical.

For playing music any external hard drive will do, it doesn't need to be usb3.
Guayadeque has no problems with ntfs partitions (mine is on ntfs).
You also don't need a separate partition just for music. My music library is next to tons of photos and videos. Streaming music is not a demanding task.

The main reason why I'm asking is because I remember people bringing up issues about having the music in external drives but can't really remember what it was about and whether they are fixed. The question in short is: does guayadeque work as well with a external drive as it does the normal way? I would be nice if someone could confirme this....

I imagined ntfs would be fine but is good to have confirmation on this.

The main thing is to consider is to have the disc mounted before you update your library because if Guayadeque doesn't find it, it will remove all the tracks (and it's metadata).
In particular, unless your drive is always mounted, do not enable "Update library on application start".

If you mean the database that shouldn't be too much of a problem as I'm in the habit of backing it up regularly.

Thanks
